Tangsteel Successfully Achieves Mass Stable Production of Ultra-Wide Tinplate


In February, Hebei Iron and Steel Group's Tangsteel Company successfully rolled off 1,000 tons of tinplate with a width specification of 1,890 mm, marking a significant milestone in achieving mass stable production of ultra-wide tinplate. The product met customer requirements with a first-time inspection pass rate and excellent shape control, indicating that the production has reached the design limit of the line’s maximum width, an increase of 50 mm over the previous maximum width specification.


The MRT-2.5 tinplate produced belongs to the food-grade category, which has a high market demand and is primarily used for manufacturing cans or lids that require good flexibility. Producing ultra-wide tinplate not only maximizes the advantages of the production line’s equipment but also enhances machine-hour yield. However, controlling the shape of ultra-wide tinplate is challenging, as it is prone to wave defects, which is considered a significant industry challenge.


Tangsteel remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing product quality and reducing costs, focusing on these two core areas. The company has established and implemented a comprehensive index management system, organizing its technical center and hot rolling division to tackle the challenges associated with the production of MRT-2.5 ultra-wide tinplate. The research team adopted head micro-wave rolling and head heating rolling techniques to mitigate the wave defects in the strip, optimizing production capacity. Additionally, they established a dimensional trend tracking system to identify issues early, providing timely warnings and coordinating solutions, thereby strengthening the correlation between product quality and equipment precision.


Tangsteel also organized the hot rolling division to promote full-process equipment management centered on precision. The optimization of the width-setting and stand-width reduction rules for large cross-section tinplate significantly improved the width accuracy rate for ultra-wide tinplate. This comprehensive approach has not only solved the technical difficulties but also set a new benchmark in the industry for producing high-quality ultra-wide tinplate.
